Get Your Dealer License in Georgia

Step 1: Pre-licensing Seminar - $159

All applicants for a used car license are required to attend a board-approved seminar prior to applying for an initial license.

Step 2: Location - Office Space for as low as $200 a month (need 1st and last month usually)

To find a location, resources include the commercial real estate section on Craigslist, real estate agents experienced in commercial property & zoning and other auto dealers. Here is how you find out where other dealers have leased space.

Step 1: Search cars for sale on Craigslist by dealers.

Step 2: Take the phone number from the Craigslist listing and search it on the internet.

Step 3: Take the address of the dealer and search to find the office complex or warehouse that allows auto dealers.

Step 4: Last step is to contact the landlord for any vacancies.

Step 3: Incorporation & EIN - $140 DIY

Incorporate online at the Georgia Secretary of State

The incorporation fee is $100. Georgia requires you to advertise your intent to incorporate in the appropriate print publication. The publication currently charges $40 for this service.

To apply for your Employer Identification Number (EIN), visit the IRS website. It's FREE to apply.

You may need these numbers: NAICS Code for Used Car Dealers 441120 and SIC Code 5521.

Step 4: Bond - $35,000

I describe a Bond as an insurance policy for your customers. You only pay a percentage of the Bond amount. That percentage is based on your credit score with the most favorable rates for those with 680 score or higher in my experience.

Step 5: Liability Insurance

An original certificate of insurance must show:

  • Policy number
  • Amount of coverage (liability-only is not acceptable)
  • The exact name and address as shown on the application
  • “Certificate Holder” must be listed as: State Board of Used Motor Vehicle Dealers, 237 Coliseum Drive, Macon, GA. 31217

Step 6: Obtain Sales Tax Number

You can apply online through the Georgia Department of Revenue. More information is available here through their website.

Step 7: Criminal Record Check and Fingerprints

Register online at the Georgia Applicant Processing Services (GAPS) or by calling Cogent Systems at 1-888-439-2512.

  • When registering, the ORI number to use when prompted is GA922400Z. The Verification Code is 922400Z.
  • The Reason for Printing is Used Motor Vehicle Dealer License.

Results of the fingerprint-based background check will be available for board review after the fingerprint process is complete.

Step 8: Submit your Dealer License Application - $170

Complete the Used Car Dealer Application online and make sure all required documents are in order.

Fee: $170 (check or money order)

Mail your completed application to:

Georgia State Board of Registration of Used Motor Vehicle Dealers and Used Motor Vehicle Parts Dealers
Board of Used Motor Vehicle Dealers
237 Coliseum Dr.
Macon, GA 31217
